Ayawara is an Afro percussion ensemble based in Glasgow for the last 7 years. They play the fantastic and diverse rhythms and songs of traditional West Africa and the West Indies. The music is played on Djembe and Dunun drums as well as a variation of other percussion instruments such as bells and shakers. They produce a fascinating and colourful collage of rhythms originally played during celebrations (such as religious occasions, harvests or victories), work and initiation rites.
Their performances produce a rhythmic feast that is accessible and enjoyable for all.
They also teach drumming and dancing as these two are totally related.
The name Ayawara is a combined word from the languages of Ghana and Mali, two very influential countries in terms of Ayawara's music.
AYA is a symbol of confidence and literally means "the fern", a defiant plant which will grow anywhere, whilst WARA translates to " the wild beast"!!!
